FPE Architects won this commission in an invite-only architectural competition. The project mission was to update the building and maximize retail space. Sited on a Fifth Avenue corner, adjacent to MOMA, the location is ideal for retail. FPE architects designed a 3-story annex within the existing, dreary entrance plaza, creating a 3-story retail base and a monumental double-height lobby entrance. The steel-framed annex is sheathed in Indiana limestone to match the tower, and the project included 100% replacement of the original double-hung windows with tilt-and-turn windows. At the project’s completion, the Gap closed on the entire annex with a long-term lease.
